Commissioned to explore the potential of a large suburban site in the tightly held enclave of Maylands, South Australia, this concept and feasibility study investigates a high end residential development. A range of development scenarios were tested, from two to four dwellings, with the final direction favouring a more restrained duplex outcome that prioritises space, amenity and long-term liveability.
Responding sensitively to the prevailing character of predominantly single storey cottages, the upper level is carefully recessed from the streetscape, reducing its visual impact while creating the opportunity for an elevated roof garden. The material palette reinforces this hierarchy, with robust brickwork grounding the building at street level, and a lighter rendered expression above.
A key driver of the scheme was the provision of generous private open space. By limiting the development to two residences, each dwelling benefits from a substantial backyard, with capacity for a swimming pool and outdoor entertaining, delivering a refined balance between built form and landscape.
